May Is Mental Health Awareness Month: A Time to Reflect, Support, and Act
As we step into May, weāre reminded of the importance of tending not just to our physical health, but to our mental well-being as well. Mental Health Awareness Month invites us to break down stigma, spark meaningful conversations, and support one another in ways that truly matter. Itās a time to pause, reflect, and ask: How are we really doing? And how can we better support the mental wellness of those around us?
Mental health affects every aspect of our livesāfrom relationships and work to how we cope with stress and engage with the world. Yet, for far too long, conversations around mental health have been clouded by silence or misunderstanding. The good news is: thatās changing. More people are speaking up, seeking help, and advocating for a healthier, more compassionate approach to emotional wellness.
Iām especially proud to share that my daughter is part of that movement. As president of our local Raise Your Voice chapter, she and her peers are working to promote mental health awareness and advocacy among youth and within our broader community. Their dedication, empathy, and leadership are a powerful reminder that change begins with open, honest dialogueāand a willingness to care deeply.
In support of Mental Health Awareness Month, Raise Your Voice is hosting a Walk/Run for Mental Health on Sunday, May 4 at Wausau West High School. This event is open to all and offers a meaningful way to show support, raise awareness, and stand together as a community that values emotional well-being.
Whether you walk in memory of someone, in support of a loved one, or simply as a statement that mental health mattersāyour presence makes a difference.
We all have mental health, just as we all have physical health. By participating in events like this, and by continuing the conversation at home, at work, and in our schools, we help create a culture where itās okay to not be okayāand where help is always within reach.
Letās make this May a month of action, connection, and compassion. We hope to see you there!
