Mental Health Awareness

May Is Mental Health Awareness Month: A Time to Reflect, Support, and Act As we step into May, we’re reminded of the importance of tending not just to our physical health, but to our mental well-being as well. Mental Health Awareness Month invites us to break down stigma, spark meaningful conversations, and support one another in ways that truly matter. It’s a time to pause, reflect, and ask: How are we really doing? And how can we better support the mental wellness of those around us? Yet, for far too long, conversations around mental health have been clouded by silence or misunderstanding. The good news is: that’s changing. More people are speaking up, seeking help, and advocating for a healthier, more compassionate approach to emotional wellness. I’m especially proud to share that my daughter is part of that movement. Settling In: The Gentle Art of Starting a New Job

Settling In: The Gentle Art of Starting a New Job There’s something undeniably exciting about starting a new job. Whether it’s a long-awaited promotion, a leap into a new industry, or a shift toward better alignment with your values, a new role often brings a sense of hope and possibility. But even when it’s a move you’re thrilled about, the transition can feel… disorienting. The faces are unfamiliar, the processes foreign, and the rhythm of your day completely upended. If you’ve recently stepped into a new job and found yourself wondering, ā€œWhen will this start to feel normal?ā€ā€”you’re not alone. The Adjustment Curve Is Real It’s completely normal to feel a bit out of sync in your first few weeks—or even months—on the job. According to workplace psychologists, the average time it takes to truly acclimate to a new role can range from 3 to 6 months. This timeline can stretch longer if the job is particularly complex or in a field that’s brand new to you. In the beginning, there’s often a...

Nut Bread

Lala’s Legacy: Baking Gladys Gay’s Nut Bread with My Daughter There’s something deeply comforting about baking from an old family recipe box—the kind with soft, yellowed paper and ink that’s just beginning to fade. A few years back, my daughter Lolly and I pulled out a gem: Gladys Gay’s Nut Bread. And what a treat it turned out to be—not just the bread, but the moment we carved out together in the kitchen. My husband and son were away for the week, so Lolly and I seized the chance for a little mother-daughter staycation here in Central Wisconsin. With cooler, fall-like weather rolling in, it was the perfect time to turn on the oven again. After a few days of picnicking, gardening, and a spontaneous fishing trip, we decided to wind down with some baking. Lolly wanted to choose a recipe from my grandmother’s collection—what we lovingly call Lala’s Legacy Box. Now, a little backstory: Lolly is named after both of her great-grandmothers. Her middle name is Luella, and when her big brother ...

Packing Up and Moving Home: What to Expect When Your College Kid Comes Back for Summer The final exams are over, the dorm room is (almost) packed, and your college student is heading home for the summer. Cue the happy tears, open arms… and maybe a tiny bit of chaos! If you’re anything like me, you’re thrilled to have your child home again — but you’re also wondering where exactly you’re going to put all their ā€œstuff,ā€ and what life will look like under one roof after months apart. Here’s what I’ve learned from helping my college student pack up, move home, and settle back in — all with as much laughter and grace as possible. The Art of Packing (and the Reality Check) If you imagine your college student neatly folding clothes and organizing boxes days before move-out, let me save you the trouble: it’s going to be a last-minute sprint.
