Lala's Legacy: Untitled Mixed Drink

I'm not much of an alcohol expert, so I have no idea what this drink should really be called. I tried to look up other Whiskey recipes in the hopes of finding something similar with no luck.  I'll go through the steps of making this with you, but I want to warn you ahead of time that I'm convinced there's a reason this isn't a known recipe: unless you have a glass of whiskey and add a splash of the juice mix, it's really not that great.  But I want you to still make this because it makes for the most amazing Adult-Only popsicles!  You can always make these youth friendly by omitting the booze.

Sensing that this recipe would be overwhelming for just my husband and I, and especially since alcohol and I don't get along, I decided to halve the recipe when I prepped it.  Imagine the photo above with twice as many lemons if making the full recipe.

To start, I placed the orange juice concentrate in a bowl of warm water to speed along the thawing process.  Ideally this would be left in the fridge all day or overnight, but for the sake of time a bowl of warm water works.  While the juice thawed, I cut the lemons in half.  Before cutting them, I should have taken the time to zest them.  You can always freeze lemon zest and have it on hand for future recipes.  Hindsight!  These lemons had a very thick rind making them a challenge to juice but my husband came to the rescue.

Side note:  I love my Iowa cutting board.  It's made from Corion (the countertops), and I bought it from a market vendor shortly before we moved from Iowa City to Wausau.  Corion makes for a great cutting surface: scratch resistant, antibacterial and antimicrobial properties because there isn't anything for the little buggers to stick to, and my favorite part is that it's dishwasher safe making clean up a breeze.

There's whiskey and then there's whiskey!  I wanted to use the whiskey we keep in our liquor cabinet but that idea was quickly squashed when I was told that is only for straight drinking and NOT mixing.  I bought the least expensive whiskey I could find at the grocery store and my resident expert agreed this brand was strictly for mixing purposes.

We made the call to add the whiskey to the glass first and then top with the juice mix.  This was a mistake.  It should be juice to booze and not the other way around.  Since we didn't add the whiskey to the pitcher, the kids had the chance to enjoy the thick juice drink with no complaints about it.  While eating Pizza Casserole, we were trying to think about what else we could do with the remainder of the juice.  One of our tweens suggested popsicles and we all agreed that was a great idea.

If you decide to give this recipe a go, my suggestion would be to make the full recipe for a large crowd, or 1/2 the recipe for a dinner party of 4-6 adults.  "Whiskey to taste" should be translated as a lot of whiskey.  And the popsicle idea seems solid.  I'm currently freezing four without the alcohol and two with (I'd make more but I don't know if the whiskey to juice ratio is low enough for them to freeze).

If you make this, please let me know how it turns out in the comments below.  And as always, remember to follow Caught Red Threaded on Facebook and Instagram for exclusive offers and ideas.
