From Generation to Generation

I recently read an article from a classic Generation X.  While some of it rang true, much of it felt more like a rant.  Born at the tail end of 1979, my generational status waivers between feeling like a former trend setting Xer, and a current hipster Y (but let's be real, there's very little about me that is "hipster" besides my literal hips).  As of late, I have been creating my own career path, a typical trait of both demographics.  Part of me wants the closest parking space at the grocery store, while another side of me wants to ride our Xtracycle there.

While my American Dream appears vastly different from my Grandparents, it's actually very much the same.  They chose a line of work, produced it from nothingness, and thrived doing so.  I left my (very comfortable) office job last month to do part time consulting work and spend more time building Caught Red Threaded.  Although I had my reservations at the time, I felt that it was important to not work 60 hours each week, especially since I was falsely maintaining the facade that I was also a stay-at-home parent.  I almost never made dinner, barely managed to get the laundry switched, etc.  When your spouse is in graduate school, they are home on a minimal basis, and having both of us gone was not an ideal option for our children (am I sounding like an older version of Gen X yet?).  I am a bit of a perfectionist (shouldn't come as a surprise).  I would rather juggle three balls well than seven balls only to have them all fall.

Fear of failure is always looming, in every aspect of life: what if I'm not the best mother, wife, house-keeper, cook, is it wrong that I don't bother folding the socks anymore?, among other things.  Caught Red Threaded is a hobby turned career.   Like any business, it could fail but odds are good it won't.  Others absolutely adore what they have seen so far.  I am currently working on a special order from a tattoo studio to produce 40 rice packs.  You might happen to find a lavender spray by Caught Red Threaded at your dentist's office.  Step into your favorite hair salon and Caught Red Threaded just may be on display.  If your acupuncturist doesn't carry rice packs, they may happen to refer you to Caught Red Threaded because they know how much you would benefit from owning one.  You know these are all real life scenarios, right?  Clearly failure isn't an option anytime soon.

I may not work in an office at the point in my career path, but I love what I do, and am absolutely smitten that others love it too.  When my grandparents pulled in to Ellis Island, they only had the memories of their homeland, and the hope for a fruitful future.  Caught Red Threaded began as nothing more than a dream and is growing into a sustainable business.  Without the efforts of my peers in Generation X, something as simple as writing this blog would not be possible.  On that same note, thanks to my Y comrades I know I am not alone in creating my own path.
