Lala's Legacy: Apple Crunch

I should begin by telling you that when I decided on this recipe, it was under the assumption that there were plenty of apples in the fridge.  I remember buying the apples, and I didn't eat the apples... but I don't live alone.  The apples were all but gone when I went to retrieve them.  So instead of making an Apple Crunch, I'm making a Pear-Apple Crunch (4 pears and 1 apple).  I'm glad the kids are choosing healthy snacks, I don't want you to think I'm complaining.  I had to laugh it off. So other than subbing out a different fruit, this recipe is true to form.  Sort of.  The written recipe on the card below is word for word, the same as the original.  However, I chose to make this one Gluten Free and Vegan so that I could be my own taste tester for once (not really, I've also tried these recipes:  Grapefruit Avocado Salad ,  Thousand Island Dressing ,  Potato Chip Cookies ). If you're following the glutenous version, use the recipe card below.

I thought it was time I got back to the basics.  Caught Red Threaded started from this idea that I could make things for my kids.  Pouring love into the things that would surround Jack and Avia in their early days, and for many years to come as I've expanded the list of things I make to meet their needs along the way.  When it all began, I was sewing by hand.  I could count the number of burp clothes made by how long the kids would nap.  If they nap for 2 hours, I can make this many burp clothes, or I can finish this much of a quilt.  I had a sewing machine, but I preferred hand stitches.  It was due in part to having a very basic, not so heavy-duty or user-friendly sewing machine.  The other part was that I must have lost my mind in the midst of sleep deprivation. About five years ago, I bought a new sewing machine.  I'm still so amazed by what it can do!  The time savings alone makes it worth its weight in gold.  My machine isn't available on Amazon, but the latest vers

Lala's Legacy: Sugar Cookies

www.caughtredthreaded.com A plate of warm sugar cookies! Baby, it's cold outside!  It's so cold that my car won't start, which means I won't make my favorite pilates class .  This is the kids first day back at school after a derailed holiday break.  We were scheduled to travel the midwest, visiting Grandparents.  Instead, fevers kept us at home.  This was the first winter break that we have not been with family.  We were home relaxing, watching movies, playing board and card games, and I did a lot of sewing (none of which you'll find on Caught Red Threaded ... and I can't even post photos because it's all a baby gift for my future niece/nephew). Back to the car not starting.  It's been a windchill of -30 or colder for the last 10 days.  About 6 days ago I had to keep my car out of the garage until further notice because it's so cold outside the garage door won't open without a great deal of human assistance.  I wish Click and Clack c

Lala's Legacy: Hamburg(er) Casserole

I am SO SORRY that it has been months since my last recipe posted.  Our oven went caput... you may remember me lamenting about it's inabilities.  Well, it just couldn't take me any longer.  And vice-versa.  After what seemed like too much research, we finally found the perfect range to fit where the defunct one once sat.  Check out this beauty (and it's matching microwave)! I'm very happy to have a working oven! My new oven is AMAZING!!!!  I can't sing its praises enough.  If you want to buy the same one, we bought ours from Home Depot .  To make a long story short, be sure to check with a team member at Home Depot that they can actually install this in your home as that wasn't the case for us.  Clearly we are good at problem solving because it's been hard at work since Thursday. Since I'm easing back into the world of oven-havers, I thought I'd make this super simple recipe from Lala's Mom, my Great-Grandmother, Mary Cornelia Southcom

Lala's Legacy: Ice Box Rolls, Cinnamon Roll Style

Lala's Ice Box rolls aren't just your every day run of the mill dinner rolls.  They are so special that they are typically only made once a year, as part of the Thanksgiving feast.  And my Grandma made not only dinner rolls (clover leaf are perfect with this recipe), but she also made half the dough into a sweet roll.  I decided to focus on the sweet roll.   Each time I make these, I'm so amazed at how big, airy, and delicious they are.  My Mom makes many things well, but Lala's Ice Box Rolls are the exception to the rule.  And of course, like almost every recipe in Lala's arsenal, I do not remember a time when she made these rolls.  As for my Mom, I have an idea of where things go awry.  The problems occur at any one of these junctures: margarine instead of butter (have to keep it Pareve for the sake of a meat meal), non-dairy creamer instead of milk, old/spent yeast packets, making ahead and freezing, boxed mashed potatoes instead of fresh made, over ba

Lala's Legacy: Gladys Gay's Nut Bread

I have to admit, I had very little to do with this recipe.  While my husband and son are out of town, my daughter and I are taking advantage of a staycation.  It's been great!  We picked up the house and it hasn't gotten out of control since.  We've been on a picnic, taken walks, shopped, gardened together which led to finding worms which led to fishing, and in general have had a wonderful time.   My daughter is named for both of my Grandmothers, of blessed memory.  Her middle name is Luella, and when she was a newborn, her big brother couldn't pronounce her first name.  He was only 22 months old, and it would be another year before he would refer to her by her first name.  Instead, we asked if he could say Luella.  He said Lala, and that became her nickname.  Well, that and Lala Baby.  I had always called my Dad's Mom Lala and it felt very awkward for me to call my daughter this, almost as if I was calling my new baby Grandma.  Instead, I started to call he

Lala's Legacy: Grapefruit Avocado Salad

As each ingredient was mixed in, the same thought popped into my head: I'm ruining Lime Jell-O, I'm ruining this lovely grapefruit, I'm ruining this avocado.   To back up, this has been one of the dreaded recipes from the collection.  I put it into the salad category based on recipe title alone.  Growing up, Jell-O was always a sweet dessert.  It wasn't until adulthood that I experienced Jell-O as a side dish.  My husband's Paternal Grandma would always serve gelatin (plain) with shredded carrots and shredded pineapple suspended.  His Maternal Grandma was also a whiz with Jell-O, using a metal mold that somehow she was able to get the gelatinous creation out of unharmed.  Hers were sweet much like my Mom's.  My Mom had a variety of Tupperware Jell-O molds.  She'll make you any flavor, with any canned fruit, and even add in Cool Whip to give it a mousse effect.   Alas, this is not my Mother's Jell-O.  This is something altogether much differe
